Hypocrisy Within My Own Family
by Reborn2002 inyesterday my brother (ever-loyal witness baptized same day as me 10 years ago; who is married to a holier-than-thou regular pioneer and subsequently with her encouragement has since avoided me as much as possible since i da myself) and his wife (see description above) came over to visit.. well.. shooting the proverbial shit, we got to the topic of movies.
asking politely if he or his wife had seen lord of the rings.. she interjected that it was inappropriate because it suggested wizardry and spiritism, and would never see such filth.
trying very hard to remain polite, my mom noticed the pause and said if they wanted to borrow any movies we have on tape to watch at home.. sneaky as i am, while they flapped their gums with my parents i glanced in the bag to see what they borrowed.. they took:.

I can't stand the Wedding Anniversary gifts & celebrations but the anniversary of someone's birth is demonic. Like the cake is possessed or something. Excuse - I can buy a gift any day of the year! (yeah except that one) They take the fun out of everything.
Or giving gifts 1-2 weeks after christmas - that one is a killer. Along with having a big meal with turkey on christmas or thanksgiving because everyone has the day off and turkeys are on sale.
Then there are the video games. Ghosts, magic, killing, stealing, on & on.
And the fact that playing these games with worldly kids at their house is ok but the worldly kids at their house is not allowed but the game can still be played there. Can't play with that kid cause he owns a skateboard, or bleaches his hair. Why can't they give the real reason - EVER!
I love the plates with the rare meats swimming in bloody juice and if you over-cook, you've done it wrong & wasted the meat. But you can't eat blood pudding. (but who'd want to - maybe Eman)
How bout the pagan rituals at a JW wedding but holidays are out, even tho the reason is cause things don't mean the same things now - or things can have multiple meanings.
Don't clink your knife on that glass, you'll call up the spirits. How occultish can you get? You'd have to believe in spiritism in order for this to put the fear of god (which one I don't know) in you!
I've got a million of them.
If everyone is so worried how things look - how does hypocrisy look?
OR worried that you could be accidently be worshipping a pagan god - you must really believe these gods actually exist! How bout when you say - I just love this SUN on my face, and this lamp, and you get the idea.
All of this is for a reason, I know. They are no part of this world. More like out of this world.

Giving Up Smoking
by ballistic ini'm giving up smoking on the 22nd.
it will be the third time, but this time as part of a government sponsored training course with drugs and patches supplied etc.
anyone else given up and got any helpfull advise?.

by Amazing inits all about lurkers: there are at least three main types of lurkers, 1. a jw with doubts, concerns, feeling that something is wrong with the religion, 2. an ex-jw who is caught between two worlds, and does not feel free yet to live a normal life, 3. a non-jw who is either involved with a jw, or a relative of a jw, or is in the middle of being studied with by the jws.. defining moments: everything we write, say, and do is observed by the lurkers.
in a single moment, or a series of collected comments, we will eventually cause a lurker to have a defining moment ... a point in time where they decide that being a jw is not for them anymore, or that they can stop living between two worlds, or cease studying, and not join the religion.
we may never know who we help, or how many.. flame wars and character attacks: when we get embroiled in these, whether we are the instigator or the brunt of the attacks ... what are we really doing?

I agree people here are just people. You take the good, the bad, and the ugly, (no offense to the ugly ones - you know who you are).
There are enough good posts that way out number the arguments. Sometimes under the cover of anonymity is the only way to vent. I being a lurker turned poster can say I support this group therapy.the comment about inviting them in is exactly what I "teach" the people I run into about what to do when they come to your door. Too bad they stay clear of my house.
I can't get into details because I'm one of the paranoid ones. I'm working on my marriage. I am not the same person before this shite happened that is for sure. Talk about being born again! It almost feels like I've been "called" to educate. The hard part is learning how & when to do it, being respectful, loving and sympathetic.
I'm working on it and when I write my book, you can all have copies! -

the first outside book i ever read about jws was in the late 1970s by james beckford.

I know exactly what you are describing. Been there.
Problem, this slow thing goes against the idea that the longer you wait the worse it is.
First step is to ignore it (hard) and try to get close (like dating again) Fill the "love" hole. Oh my that sounds bad. You know what I mean.

Julien, I'm so sorry about your dad, my aunt is going thru the same but has no family to live with, she relies on strangers most of the time.
When my daughter was about 4 she was told (by a JW) that there was no such thing as Santa Claus, that her parents are lying to her and that Santa is evil.
When she asked me about it I replied
"When you stop believing he stops coming" This might sound mean but when you grow up and realize the lessons learned in relation to the idea of giving, most importantly to the less fortunate, the lessons are in your heart, not written in a book to be memorized. We still joke about this - she has never forgotten it.Same with believing in God. When you stop believing you find there is no God. If you keep believing you can find comfort when life is at it's bleekest, whether it be in the bible, support of friends, family, whatever. It takes the place of the unexplained. The Mythos.
If you stop believing there is the scientific route. That is why there are so many people searching for cures, donating for research, & dedicating their lives to end mankind's suffering. The Logos
Some believe in both.

Even if you've totally screwed up in the beginning, you can start again.
Slow and steady is the only way.
SLOW is the most important because sometimes you can get the feeling that there is a "turn" and take the next step too quickly.Waiting for more.

"Scary World" is exactly right. I am not a JW but have been thrown into its world against my will. I first started researching about 3.5 yrs ago, I cannot describe the emotions I went thru. I feel like I WAS IN and am now out, and experiencing the shunning that is spoken of here. Its scary all right.
Being a long time lurker on this board allowed me to see the human aspects, put a face on it, and learn from your experiences.
I wish this board was the first place I had come to.
